For everyone who has lost something and needs help finding it.
He was born Fernando Martins de Bulhões in Lisbon in 1195, into a wealthy noble family. He became a Franciscan friar, took the name Anthony, and quickly became one of the most brilliant preachers the Church had ever heard. Saint Francis of Assisi himself wrote him a letter — the only letter Francis ever wrote to another friar — addressing him simply as my bishop.
During his lifetime Anthony was already being called a wonder worker. Miraculous healings were reported wherever he preached. When a crowd in Rimini refused to listen to his sermon he went to the riverbank and preached to the fish instead — and they gathered at the surface to hear him. He was said to have appeared in two places at once. The miracles were so numerous and so well documented that when he died at thirty-five, Pope Gregory IX canonized him less than a year later — one of the fastest canonizations in Church history. In 1946 Pope Pius XII declared him a Doctor of the Church, one of only 37 people in history to receive that title, recognizing the extraordinary depth of his theological writing and preaching.
He is depicted on this medal holding the infant Jesus — a reference to a vision in which Christ appeared to him as a child, drawn by the depth of Anthony's love and prayer. It is one of the most tender images in all of Catholic iconography.
The story of how he became patron saint of lost things is disarmingly simple. A young novice stole Anthony's beloved book of psalms — precious to him both as scripture and as the record of his own personal notes and prayers. Anthony prayed fervently for its return. The novice, overcome with remorse, brought the book back and returned to the order.
From that moment, people began asking Anthony to help them find what was lost.
Tony, Tony, look around — something's lost and must be found. The prayer has been said in every language, in every country, by grandmothers and children and desperate searchers of every kind for eight hundred years.
He is Patron Saint of lost things, the poor, travelers, and all who seek what has gone missing — whether a key, a document, a relationship or a sense of direction.
Saint Anthony, pray for us.
This large sterling silver oval medal carries his image on the front — Saint Anthony holding the infant Jesus tenderly in his arms, engraved stars on either side, the words Saint Anthony Pray For Us encircling the pendant.
