George was a soldier of Greek origin who rose to serve in the Roman Emperor Diocletian's elite guard — the same emperor who would later persecute Christians with devastating ferocity.

When Diocletian ordered the persecution of Christians, George distributed his wealth to the poor, declared himself openly a Christian and confronted the emperor directly. He was tortured and martyred at Lydda in Palestine in 303 AD — refusing to the last to deny his faith.

His courage spread like fire through the early Christian world. Crusaders invoked his name in battle. King Richard I placed his army under George's protection. Shakespeare immortalized him in Henry V — Cry God for Harry, England and Saint George! King Edward III made him patron saint of England in 1350 and founded the Order of the Garter in his name.

The dragon legend came later — a medieval allegory as old as the imagination of faith. A terrifying dragon held a town in its grip, demanding sacrifice. George rode out alone, trusting in God, and slew it. The dragon has always represented the powers of darkness — evil, persecution, the devil himself. George, through unwavering faith, defeated it.

He is patron saint of soldiers, of England, and of all who face their own dragons.
