Jude Thaddeus was one of the twelve apostles — a cousin of Jesus, a relative of the Blessed Mother, a farmer from Galilee who walked away from everything to follow Christ. Some traditions hold that the wedding feast at Cana, where Jesus performed his first miracle, was Jude's own wedding. He was there at the beginning of everything.

After Pentecost he traveled to Mesopotamia, Armenia and Persia — the far edges of the known world — preaching, converting and building the early Church far beyond the borders of the Roman Empire. He wrote one of the epistles of the New Testament, urging Christians to hold fast to their faith in the face of hardship and false teachers. He was martyred around 65 AD.

His very first ministry was to the desperate — writing to early Christians facing persecution, imprisonment and death, urging them not to lose heart. From the beginning, Saint Jude was the saint of those with their backs against the wall.

Long overlooked because of his name's unfortunate similarity to Judas Iscariot, over time he became the undisputed patron of those with nowhere else to turn. When the Claretian Fathers established his National Shrine in Chicago in 1929 — the very year of the great stock market crash — devotion to Saint Jude spread through Depression-era America like wildfire. Immigrants far from home, families facing poverty and loss, soldiers heading to war — they found in Jude a saint who had always understood impossible odds. His shrine still receives millions of petitions every year.
