She was a princess who chose the poor.

Elizabeth of Hungary was born into royalty in 1207, the daughter of a king, raised at a noble court, and married young to a man who loved and supported her completely. She had every comfort the medieval world could offer. She gave most of it away.

While still a young wife and mother, she founded a hospital in honor of St. Francis and tended the sick herself, in person, with her own hands. She wore simple clothing and carried bread to the hungry, often in secret.

When her husband Ludwig asked what she hid in her cloak one day, she opened it — and instead of bread, fresh roses fell out. The bread had been miraculously transformed into roses. He never questioned her charity again. It is a much beloved miracle, a tale of boundless generosity, empathy and love.

Ludwig died when Elizabeth was twenty. She was left a widow with three children, subject to a harsh spiritual director who sent her children away and treated her with great severity. She bore it with a faithfulness that astonished everyone who knew her.

She died at twenty-four. After her death, healing miracles were reported at her grave in such numbers that pilgrims came from across Europe in search of cures and answered prayers.. Within four years, the Church had canonized her. Her feast day is November 17th.

She is the patron of nurses, hospitals, caregivers, brides, widows, and all who serve the sick and the poor. She is a saint for the woman who gives without counting the cost.

This beautifully detailed oval medal features a raised profile of Saint Elizabeth holding a basket of bread — the sign of her life’s devotion. Around the medal, the words Saint Elizabeth Pray For Us. The back is blank with a brushed finish, ready to be engraved with a name, a date, or a few words of your choosing.
