She lived every life a woman can live — and kept her faith through all of them.

Rita of Cascia was a daughter, a wife, a mother, a widow, and finally a nun. She wanted the convent from girlhood, but her parents arranged her marriage. She loved her husband faithfully, and through her quiet example, turned him from a man of violence to a man of peace. He was murdered anyway, in a family feud, when she was thirty-two.

Her twin sons wanted revenge. She prayed they would be spared from that path. Within the year, they were gone too.

She came to the Augustinian convent with nothing but grief and faith. They turned her away three times, fearing the feud would follow her. She spent a year reconciling the warring families herself — a peace agreement was signed and notarized — before the doors finally opened.

She spent forty years behind them.

On Good Friday, praying before an image of Christ crowned with thorns, she received a wound on her forehead that never healed. She carried it for the rest of her life. It was considered a partial stigmata. She was canonized by Pope Leo XIII in 1900. 

She is the saint of impossible causes — not because she escaped suffering, but because she walked through every part of it and was not destroyed.

She is known, above all, for the efficacy of her prayers. Miracles are attributed to her intercession in numbers that made the Church take notice. When every door is closed and every human solution has failed, Rita is the one you bring it to.

Her feast day is May 22nd. Her incorrupt body still rests in Cascia, in a glass coffin.
