Black-Eyed Susan is a beautiful boxy fit garment-dye tee featuring original painterly art — black-eyed Susans in full bloom in a coastal New Jersey pollinator garden, one of North America's most resilient and generous native wildflowers.
She is what botanists call a pioneer species — among the first to take root wherever ground has been disturbed or destroyed. After wildfire, after storm damage, in abandoned fields and torn-up roadsides, black-eyed Susan is often the first color to return, stabilizing bare soil and preparing the way for everything that grows after her. She doesn't wait for ideal conditions. She simply begins.
Her name comes from an old English ballad, "Sweet William's Farewell to Black-Eyed Susan," written by the poet John Gay in 1720 — decades before the flower even had the name. When she was later introduced to European gardens, plant collectors reached for that already-famous ballad and gave her the name, drawn by the resemblance: golden petals ringing a dark, watchful center.
Cherokee healers used her root juice to soothe earaches; other tribes brewed her leaves and roots into teas for colds, fevers, and infections. She's a close botanical cousin to echinacea, sharing much of the same quiet medicinal generosity.
