Both phrases come from a poem published anonymously in a New Orleans newspaper in 1848 — a poem so quietly true that it has been wandering the world ever since, gathering wisdom as it goes: Happiness is like a butterfly, the more you chase it, the faster it flies. But if you sit quietly, it will come and sit softly on your shoulder.
