In the medieval Catholic tradition, the marigold was known as Mary's Gold — a flower that bloomed at the times of the great Marian feast days and was laid at her feet as a humble offering. Humble, bright and inexhaustibly generous. A poor woman's flower. A flower that understood devotion.

The bees found it immediately. They were at work before the world woke, nose-down in the ruffled saffron blooms, unhurried and purposeful. Matins is the first prayer of the day — sung before sunrise when everything is still quiet. In the garden, the bees were already there.

This particular marigold grew in a coastal New Jersey pollinator garden — taller than expected, more generous than imagined, returning the following year from its own scattered seed as if it simply couldn't bear to leave.
