For everyone who has ever needed grace and known where to ask for it.

On the night of July 18th, 1830, a young novice named Catherine Labouré was awakened in her convent on the Rue du Bac in Paris by a child's voice and a flooding light. She rose and followed it to the chapel — and found it blazing as if for midnight Mass, every candle lit, the altar radiant. A woman in white appeared and sat in the director's chair. Catherine knelt beside her and rested her hands in the woman's lap as naturally as a child with her mother. They spoke for two hours.

The woman was Mary, the Mother of God.

She came again in November, this time appearing within an oval of light, wearing rings that shot rays of light onto the earth below her. Around the oval were the words: O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee. Then the oval turned and Catherine saw the back — the letter M surmounted by a cross, two hearts below it, twelve stars encircling everything. The M for Mary. The cross for the sacrifice of Christ. The two hearts — the Immaculate Heart of Mary and the Sacred Heart of Jesus, united. The twelve stars for the apostles.

Have this medal struck, Mary said. All who wear it will receive great graces.

Catherine told no one except her confessor for forty-six years. The medal was struck in 1832. Within two years, millions were being worn across France and beyond. Miraculous cures were reported. Conversions followed. The medal earned its name from the people who wore it.

Catherine Labouré died in 1876, her identity as the visionary unknown to almost everyone around her. She was canonized in 1947.

This classic sterling silver oval Miraculous Medal carries Mary on the front — her image encircled by the prayer O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee — and on the back the full Miraculous symbol: the M, the cross, the two hearts and the twelve stars, exactly as Catherine saw them in the vision of 1830. It is the most complete and traditional expression of the medal as Our Lady requested it.

The Miraculous Medal is worn today as it has always been worn — as an act of trust, a request for grace, a small and tangible reminder that something larger is watching over us.

O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee.
