Commonly called Mizpah in Hebrew, this literally means 'watchtower'.  It refers to the Biblical story of Jacob and Laban. Mizpah jewelry was particularly popular in Victorian times often taking the form of a heart cut in two pieces, each half to be worn by friends or lovers who are temporally parted. It adopted a more general meaning over time - "may God watch over you".
