Milkweed is the only plant on earth monarch caterpillars can eat, making it their sole food source and the one plant no monarch can survive without. This particular milkweed was grown from seed in a turkey roasting pan on St. Patrick's Day; twelve confident seedlings were planted in a circle on the Summer Solstice. Then a monarch appeared at the mailbox milkweed in July — and flew past the bay window the same day, as if to be sure it was seen.

Every monarch begins as a striped caterpillar with an appetite for one plant alone. She spins herself into stillness, disappears entirely, and emerges something unrecognizable — wings folded, patient, waiting for the strength to open. It is one of the natural world's quiet miracles, happening constantly in gardens most people walk right past.
