For every mother carrying something precious and trusting in God's care.

He was a poor tailor's son from a hillside town in southern Italy, born in 1726. His father died when he was twelve and he went to work as a tailor's apprentice, giving a third of everything he earned to his mother and sisters and the rest to the poor. He tried repeatedly to enter religious life and was turned away each time because of his fragile health. The Redemptorists finally accepted him in 1749 as a lay brother — not a priest, never ordained — and he served as sacristan, gardener, tailor and infirmarian with equal and extraordinary devotion.

He was twenty-nine years old when he died of tuberculosis. In his short life he was credited with healing the sick, restoring a boy's life after he fell from a cliff, appearing in two places at once, and walking on water. When falsely accused of fathering a child he said nothing in his own defense — and was vindicated only when the woman confessed she had lied. As he lay dying he asked for a sign to be placed above his door:

Here the will of God is done, as God wills, and as long as God wills.

The story of how he became the patron saint of expectant mothers begins with a handkerchief.

One day Gerard dropped his handkerchief while visiting a family. A young girl ran after him to return it. He told her simply — keep it. It will be useful to you someday. Years later, that same young woman was dying in childbirth. She remembered his words and asked for the handkerchief to be brought to her. When it was placed upon her, the pain ceased and she delivered a healthy child.

Word spread through Italy and then through the world. Mothers began carrying his medal into labor. They still do.

He is patron saint of expectant mothers, unborn children, mothers, childbirth and the falsely accused — everyone who has placed something precious in God's hands and trusted the outcome.

Saint Gerard, pray for us.

This sterling silver oval medal carries his image on the front — Saint Gerard holding a cross, with the words Saint Gerard Pray For Us encircling the pendant. The back can be engraved with a name, a date, or a word of hope — making this a deeply personal gift for an expectant mother, a new parent, or anyone awaiting a precious arrival.

What to engrave: A name. A due date. A single word — Protect. Beloved. Hope. Safe. Up to 8 characters per line, three lines available.

For the expectant mother. The anxious father. The grandmother counting the days. The friend who wants to offer something meaningful for the baby shower. For anyone who has ever carried hope and fear in equal measure and needed to know that someone was watching over both mother and child.

.925 sterling silver oval medal, satin and antiqued finish, 1" x 5/8". On a 24 inch rhodium plated stainless steel curb chain with lobster claw clasp. Engraving available on request. Presented in an elegant velour jewelry box.
