For everyone who has ever been held captive and found freedom through faith.

Although Saint Patrick is most famous for being the well-loved Patron Saint of Ireland, his early life in the 5th century AD was anything but celebrated. He was born in Roman Britain, where he was captured by pirates and sold into slavery in Ireland. He was set to work as a shepherd, protecting large herds of sheep — a lonely and hard life outdoors. He learned the Gaelic language of the Irish and relied on his Christian faith to give him hope of freedom.

In the long nights guarding his flock, Saint Patrick often turned to prayer. One evening, God appeared to him in a vision, telling Patrick to flee his life of servitude and escape to the coast. After a long and dangerous journey to the seaside, he found sailors who agreed to take him back to his family.

Once home, Patrick again had a vision — the Irish people imploring him to come walk among them again. Despite all he had suffered, he eagerly returned to his former place of captivity as a missionary, to bring the teachings of Christ to the Irish people. He baptized hundreds, established churches, and drew followers by the thousands. Gradually the old traditions made way for the new faith — though Ireland, being Ireland, kept its own wild and mystical character throughout. The Celtic cross itself is testimony to that — the ancient sun circle wrapped around the Christian cross, paganism and Christianity literally woven together in stone.

Legend has it that he used the beloved three-leaf shamrock to illustrate the Holy Trinity of Father, Son and Holy Ghost — one plant, three leaves, one God, three persons. And the famous story of driving the snakes from Ireland? Ireland never had snakes. It is a story about something deeper — the gradual transformation of a people and their ancient beliefs, one soul at a time.

He left us one of the most beautiful prayers in the Christian tradition — his Breastplate — which opens with the words I arise today through a mighty strength, the invocation of the Trinity.

He is the Patron Saint of Ireland and of all who have ever been held captive and found freedom through faith.

Saint Patrick, pray for us.

This sterling silver oval medal carries his image on the front — Saint Patrick with his staff, the words Saint Patrick Pray For Us encircling the pendant. The back can be engraved with a name, a date, or a word of freedom — making this a deeply personal gift for anyone with Irish heritage, a love of Ireland, or a faith forged in difficult circumstances.

What to engrave: A name. A date. A single word — Eire. Free. Faith. Arise. Up to 8 characters per line, three lines available.

For the Irish and the Irish at heart. For the one who has known captivity of any kind and found their way home. For the pilgrim who heard a voice in the night and followed it.
